Domestic PV and Battery Solution - A Case Study from a Northern Ireland Home (Part 2)
What are the Benefits of PV Panels with Battery Storage & Cost?
The financial outcome in 2024 tells only part of the story. There are multiple benefits to the combination of PV panels and domestic batteries:
1. Reduced Grid Consumption
By generating a large portion of our own electricity and using batteries to store excess production, grid draw is significantly reduced. This cuts costs and reduces dependence on external energy suppliers.
2. Time Shifting of Energy Use
Batteries allow excess solar energy to be stored and used later, aligning supply with demand. In winter, charging batteries at off peak rates and using that stored electricity during peak hours reduces overall costs.
3. Reduced Carbon Emissions
Using on site renewable generation displaces electricity that would otherwise be sourced from the grid. Even though the grid is progressively decarbonising, own generation still reduces associated emissions.
4. Export Income
Exporting surplus generation and receiving payment provides an additional financial benefit. Even though export tariffs are lower than retail electricity prices, every unit exported contributes to offsetting electricity costs. Further resources can be found at https://actionrenewables.co.uk
5. Resilience and Energy Awareness
With on site energy systems owners tend to have a better understanding of consumption patterns, and this often leads to conscious efforts to reduce waste and optimise usage. Battery storage also provides a degree of resilience in the event of grid outages if the system is configured for backup.
